The Buzz 3 New dining options planned for campus by Sarah Gilbreath Communications Intern Auxiliary Services I f you are in the mood for a taste of something new on campus, you're in luck. Plans to make changes to four areas on campus are already underway, and some may be ready as soon as the end of this semester. After the resounding success of the new Dunkin' Donuts in the Student Center, people on campus are eagerly anticipating the next restaurant. The one scheduled to open first is Tech's very own Waffle House, which is moving into Tech Square. But this will not be just any Waffle House, the entire restaurant will be Tech themed, from the statues of Buzz to the seating upholstery based on the inside of the Ramblin' Wreck. The menu will also differ slightly, placing a heavy focus on to-go orders and including new "to-go friendly" items. It will even include a wi-fi lounge and an outdoor patio. The Student Center will also be getting quite a facelift. Downstairs, Pandini's will be closing to make room for a sec- ondary food court containing three new restaurants: Subway, Taco Bell, and a bigger Chick- fil-A. This new Chick-fil-A will have more menus options than the smaller one currently on the second floor. The new Taco Bell could possibly serve its full menu, including those elusive Cinnamon Twists. "We'll also be bolstering the burger menu at Jackets," said Student Center Director Rich Steele. "We want this food court to have more tradition- al, American foods." The entrance to Jackets will be redone to give the area a more open feeling, and more seat- ing will be added. ?One of the best things about this new design is that we will be able to keep one or more of the new restaurants open later at night and possibly on the week- ends," said Steele. "There's a real need for more evening options." Pandini's will close in early March and the full renovation should be completed by August. Not to be outdone, the cur- rent Food Court on the second floor is also getting a makeover. In the space of the current Chick-fil-A, there will be an Indian concept restaurant. The Burger King will also be leaving, though burgers will still be available in Jackets. In its place will be a Mediterranean- style eatery, which will serve foods like "wraps, kabobs, and falafel," said Steele. "The whole food court will have an international flair." The changes should be com- pleted by August. Last, but certainly not least, the North Avenue Apartments will be getting its own dining hall. Set to open fall 2011, the dining hall will be "a beacon for East campus," said Steele. "It's the first new dining hall Tech has built [in quite some time]. We get to start from the ground up." Occupying the space recently vacated by Quiznos and the convenience store, this new dining hall will have more ethnic foods and longer operat- ing hours. The walls will be glass to let in as much light as possible and there will be an enclosed court- yard area. The fa?ade around the dining hall will also be changing and will include a glass elevator, new stairs, and a ramp up from street level. Construction will begin this May on the project, which, as Steele said, is "our latest and greatest project so far." It?s not news that Barnes & Noble @ Georgia Tech in Technology Square is wireless on the Georgia Tech network, but it is news that now customers may enjoy Barnes & Noble @ Georgia Tech as a hotspot with total wireless connectivity beyond the Georgia Tech netowrk! eastside Market/BuzzBy Hours of Operation Day Hours Evening Hours Monday 11am-2pm 7pm-1am Tuesday 11am-2pm 7pm-1am Wednesday 11am-2pm 7pm-1am Thursday 11am-2pm 7pm-1am Friday 11am-2pm CLOSED Saturday CLOSED 7pm-1am Sunday CLOSED 7pm-1am The Buzz, Melissa Moore, Director of Communications, Auxiliary Services, Georgia Tech Auxiliary Services, 353 Ferst Drive,Atlanta, GA 30332-0273, 404-894-4990, melissa.moore@gatech.edu, www.importantstuff.gatech.edu The Buzz 4 S tamps Health Services is proud to welcome its new Medical Director, Maureen L. Olson, MD, FACEP. Joining the team on February 8th, Olson will take control of all clinical operations. A graduate of the Morehouse School of Medicine, Olson com- pleted her postdoctoral residency at the Emory University School of Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine. In addition to being Board Certified in Emergency Medicine, Olson is the Immediate Past President of the Georgia College of Emergency Physicians. She also serves on two committees of the national council for the American College of Emergency Physicians. Olson was recently appointed to the Disabilities Services Medical Review Group by the Governor of Georgia Sonny Perdue. Dr. Olson calls her role at Stamps Health Services "an honor and a privilege. The future national and world leaders in various disciplines are being trained and educated here at Georgia Tech." Eager to start to work, Olson shares her desires for the future. "We will strive to continually provide high quality, state-of-the-art health care to the Georgia Tech community." Moving forward with Parking & Transportation Dr. Maureen Olson joins Stamps Health Services by Sarah Gilbreath I f you have been on cam- pus this semester, then you have probably noticed Parking and Transportation's newest change: a brand new fleet of buses and trolleys. Following a contract with Groome Transportation, the fleet began running in January. While the trolleys are compara- ble to the older model in size and design, the new buses are more spacious and boast a brand new Tech-themed design on the side. This design, which includes golden hive-like hexagrams, has been a topic of some debate among students. "We've had several students tell us that bees have hives and yellow jackets don't," said Torise Battle, Communications Officer for Parking and Transportation. "We've done the research and we have several pictures; yellow jacket nests have that same hexagonal pattern.? continued next column Parking continued ?The design is right; we promise!" Not only have the buses changed, but some of the routes and stops have changed as well. Due to the completion of the construction on the 14th Street Bridge, the Green Route has changed. "It's actually just reverted back to the route it had three years ago before the construc- tion started," said Battle. Additionally, more of the stops now have LED screens displaying the approximate time of the next bus's arrival. More will be installed soon. Another change taking place is the Stingerette ride requests. Instead of calling an operator, students can now request a pick-up online or through an automated phone system. Of course, students can still talk to an operator if they choose. "This system was designed to alleviate the phone system, which backed up," said David Williamson, associate director, Parking and Transportation. "This method is much quick- er and easier." The system has a memory, making orders much easier. There are more than 400 pick- up and drop-off locations on campus. Of course, there are always more changes and innovations on the horizon. The next big upcoming change is switching the bus and trolley fleet from regular fuel to a product called B20. "It's a product that mixes 80 percent regular fuel with 20 percent biofuel," said Williamson. "We can turn the waste from Dining Services into bio- fuel, and the B20 will make our vehicles much more economi- cally friendly. I'm all for any new technology that burns fewer fossil fuels." When will this switch take place? Williamson responded, "Hopefully by the end of this semester. But then, I'm always optimistic." New Stingers and Tech Trolleys came to campus the beginning of Spring Semester. Check them out as you make your travels across campus. Looking for the contest? You?ve found it. The first 50 people who e-mail Melissa Moore (melissa.moore@gatech.edu) the correct answer to the com- putation will win an Auxiliary Services flash drive. The com- putation is how many years has Auxiliary Services held its Auxiliary Services loves Students Week plus what day in February did Rosalind R. Meyers accept her new duties as Vice President for Campus Services plus what year is the new North Avenue Apartments Dining Hall scheduled to open.
