What is Undergraduate Research?
- One-on-one work with faculty
- Searching for new knowledge in a field
- Discovering new phenomena, methods, and techniques
- Application of what is learned in lecture
Why do Undergraduate Research?
- Develop a better understanding of “hot” topics and areas of concern
- Experience in your field of study (or another)
- Want to know more than what’s provided in traditional coursework
- Hands-on Experience
- Preparation for graduate or professional school
- Further work with internationally known faculty members or as part of a research team
- New communication skills
- Clarify your career goals
How is the learning different than classroom learning?
- You help to formulate the question to answer
- You help to design the methods to answer the questions
- You interpret the results of your tests or discoveries
- You learn to communicate the new results to others in your field
The President of Georgia Tech strongly believes in the value of undergraduates and invites them to experience the excitement of new discovery through research. He established the President’s Undergraduate Research Awards (PURA) to encourage and supplement undergraduate research opportunities for all majors. Currently over 200 students are awarded up to $1500 in research salary to work with a faculty mentor or up to $1000 funding to present work at a professional conference.
Research is not always in laboratory and scientific settings. New discoveries in literature, social sciences, architecture, and business are also exciting avenues of learning. Students can participate in undergraduate research for course credit or pay, part time or full time. Opportunities are available institute-wide or within specific colleges and schools. Interdisciplinary opportunities are also available. Find a faculty member whose interests match yours and start doing research today!
