Title: The Challenges and Opportunities for Cataloging in Today's Changing Metadata Environment
Author: Chen, Sandy
Abstract: What are the challenges and opportunities for cataloging and authority control in today’s library environment? Given the size of growing collections with diverse materials and a variety of metadata schemes, how can catalogers achieve simplicity and interoperability for users and staff? We will review a number of issues such as the death of MARC and how XML can give new life to MARC. Similarly, we will review how the functions of METS, MODS, FRBR and FAST can help meet the goals of simplicity and interoperability.
