Figure 3: Dynamics of substrate S in medium due to uptake by cells. In panel a, all cells begin taking up substrate immediately with the same constant rate β, and the decrease in S is exponential. In panel b, cells begin taking up substrate at different times. If the initiation of uptake is normally distributed (μ = 2, σ = 1) among cells, the result is a total uptake rate β that is sigmoid, and the consequence is a corresponding sigmoid disappearance of substrate from the medium.
