Issues for Discussion During AY 05

The Benefits Committee focused on identifying issues for consideration during this academic year. The issues, and a time frame for dealing with them, are as follows:

1.      Long Term Care: The Board of Regents has withdrawn their RFP for system-wide coverage of voluntary benefits. The prices quoted were no better than what Georgia Tech currently gets, so Tech would not have received any benefit from going to a larger scale. We need to determine whether to offer a long term care policy before the end of the fall semester. We will discuss this at the September meeting.

2.      Sabbaticals: this is likely to take most of the year. We will start this in September.

3.      Review of benefits afforded to retirees and examination of existing policies to determine whether there are issues of concern. We will discuss this in October and November.

4.      Policies that allow for the sharing of sick leave (donation of sick leave from employees with extra leave to those in most need). We will discuss this in November or later.

5.      Family-Work Life Issues: Possible issues include childcare, nursing stations, the role of the Campus Rec Center, Employee Assistance Programs, and end of life care (hospice and other issues around parental and elder care). Currently, there is an ad hoc group of faculty and staff working with a consulting group and OHR to look at these issues. Specific concerns and recommendations from this group will likely be forwarded to the Benefits Committee later in the fall.

6.      “Living Wage” concept and how it applies to Georgia Tech’s classified employees: we will look at this issue when we review classified employees salaries and benefits.

Next Meeting

The fall semester meetings will be held on Mondays, from 2:30 to 4:00, on the following dates: September 27th, October 25th, and November 22nd.
