Faculty Status & Grievance Committee

MEMORANDUM

Date: September 10, 2003

To: The General Faculty Assembly

From: Mark Richards

Subject: Report of the Activities of the Faculty Status & Grievance Committee for the 2002-2003 year

The Faculty Status & Grievance Committee (FSGC) began the year with two open cases from the previous year, as well as a third that was under discussion but not yet “formally” initiated.  This case was eventually formalized by the grievant.  In addition, four new cases were filed, making a total of seven cases considered by the FSGC during the year.

The committee completed work and made recommendations to the President on three cases, leaving four cases still open as of this writing.  It is expected that at least two of these will be completed very soon.  The outgoing Chair, Mark Richards, will continue in service unofficially for a short while in order to complete the investigation and report on one of these cases.

In addition to the above case work, Mark Richards and Ed Thomas agreed that the incoming FSGC should meet with Ed to become more familiar with the alternative dispute resolution process and discuss its interaction with the grievance process.

At its meeting of August 27, 2003, the committee welcomed its one new member, Mike Rodgers of CEE (joint with EAS and Public Policy).  Charles Ume (ME) was elected as Chair for 2003-2004, and Jack Feldman (PSYCH) was re-elected as Secretary.

I’d like to thank Jack, Charles, Heidi Rockwood, Erik Verriest, Tony Wasilewski, and Gisele Welch for their service in 2003-04.  I wish the new committee an idle year.

Respectfully Submitted,

Mark A. Richards
2003-2004 Chair, Faculty Status & Grievance Committee
