MINUTES OF THE UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM MEETING

March 12, 2003

1.       The minutes for December 2 and December 4, 2002, January 6, 2003, and January 15, 2003 were distributed and approved via email prior to this meeting.

2.       A motion was made to approve the minutes of the meetings from January 29, 2003 and February 26, 2003.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

3.       A request was made to change the major designator from TFE to PFE for students majoring in Polymer and Fiber Engineering.  A motion was made to approve the change.  The motion was seconded and approved. Unanimous.

4.       The SCHOOL of APPLIED PHYSIOLOGY requested the following new course, for the purpose of renumbering an existing course. A motion was made to approve the request.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

5.       The SCHOOL OF LITERATURE, COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE requested the following new courses. A motion was made to approve the request.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

NEW COURSES

·         LCC 3234 – Creative Writing (3-0-3)

·         LCC 4204 – Poetry and Poetics II (3-0-3)

6.       The SCHOOL OF BIOLOGY requested the following new courses and changes in degree requirements. A motion was made to approve the request.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

a)      NEW COURSES

·         BIOL 2336 – General Ecology Laboratory (0-3-1)

·         BIOL 3340 – Introduction to Cell Biology (3-0-3)

·         BIOL 3341 –Cell Biology Laboratory (0-3-1)

b)      Deactivate BIOL 3331 – Cell Biology (3-3-4)

c)      Modify the degree requirements for the BS in Biology:

·         Delete BIOL 3331 (3-3-4)

·         Add BIOL 2336 (0-3-1)

·         Add BIOL 3340 (3-0-3)

·         Add BIOL 3341 (0-3-1)

·         Decrease the number of  “Free Electives” from 13 credits to 12 credits

·         No net change in credit hours required for the degree

7.       The DUPREE COLLEGE OF MANAGEMENT requested the following change to current courses and curriculum requirements.  A motion was made to approve the request.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

The BS in Management requires either MGT 3101 or MGT 3150.  Effective Fall 2003, MGT 3101 will be restricted to management majors and MGT 3150 to non-majors.  Students who complete MGT 3150 as non-majors and then become management majors will be allowed to use the credit for MGT 3150.  Students cannot receive credit for both MGT 3101 and MGT 3150.

8.       The DUPREE COLLEGE OF MANAGEMENT requested the following new course.  A motion was made to approve the request.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

NEW COURSE

MGT 4611 Integrative Management Analysis (3-0-3)

8.       The COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE requested the following changes in the degree requirements for the BS in BUILDING CONSTRUCTION. A motion was made to approve the changes.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

Delete EAS 1600 – Intro. to Environmental Science (3-3-4)

Add EAS 2601 – Earth Processes (3-3-4)

Modify the requirement for a communications-intensive humanities course to allow either LCC 2xxx or LCC 3xxx courses.

No net change in credit hours required for the degree

9.       The SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS requested the following changes to the requirements for the BS in Economics.  A motion was made to approve the changes.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

Delete ECON 3150 – Economic and Financial Modeling (3-0-3)

Delete ECON 3160 – Introduction to Empirical Economics (3-0-3)

Delete ECON 4350 – International Economics (3-0-3)

Delete ECON 4620 – History of Economic Thought (3-0-3)

Add ECON 4160 – Economic Forecasting (3-0-3)

Add CS 1322 – Object-Oriented Programming (3-0-3) or approved substitute

Increase the number of “ECON Electives” from 9 credits to 18 credits

Increase the number of “Non-major Cluster Electives” from 9 credits to 12 credits

Decrease the number of “Free Electives” from 17 credits to 11 credits

No net change in credit hours required for the degree

10.   The committee reviewed 3 petitions and heard 5 student appeals of previous petition decisions.  All were approved except noted:

 

1-to be re-admitted after second drop (1 denied)

1-to be re-admitted summer 2003

3-to withdraw from course(s) (1 denied)

1-to be concurrently enrolled

1-to transfer “D” credit for PHYS (1 denied)

1-to count courses towards degree
