MINUTES OF THE UNDERGRADUATE COMMITTEE MEETING

October 16, 2002

1.       The minutes of August 19, August 28, and September 4, 2002 were distributed and approved via e-mail prior to this meeting.

 

2.       A motion was made to approve the minutes of the September 18, 2002 meeting.  The motion was seconded and approved. Unanimous.

 

3.       The following items were approved by consent of the Committee:

 

The following programs requested approval for their majors to substitute Introduction to Media Computing, (CS 4803g, Spring 2003) for CS 1321:  ARCH, BC, BIOL, HTS, ID, INTA, MGT, PUBP, STAC, UIAC.

 

Designate three hours of BME/COE/COS electives as satisfying Core Area B for the BS in Biomedical Engineering.

 

Delete the pre-requisites (PUBP 3000 or PUBP 3016) currently specified for PUBP 3610.

 

Deactivate the following courses: HPS 1002, 1004, 1008, 1010.

 

Several Special Topics courses were added to the Catalog and other Special Topics courses were made inactive (see attached) to have the numbering scheme for these courses be consistent in all the subject areas. 

 

4.       The SCHOOL OF HISTORY, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY requested the following modification to the requirements for the BS in History, Technology and Society.  A motion was made to approve the request.  The motion was seconded and approved. Unanimous.

 

Replace “CS 1321” with “CS 1321 or a computer programming course approved as satisfying the general education requirements in computer literacy.”

 

5.       The SCHOOL OF BIOLOGY requested the following modifications to the BS degree in Biology.  A motion was made to approve the changes.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

 

Increase the maximum number of special problems hours that may be counted as part of the technical electives from 3 to 4 (out of 11 total) and revise the catalog description of BIOL 4901,2,3,4,5 accordingly.

 

Replace “CS 1321” with “CS 1321 or a computer programming course approved as satisfying the general education requirements in computer literacy.”

 

6.       The SCHOOL OF AEROSPACE ENGINEERING requested the following new courses and a modification of the requirements for the BS in Aerospace Engineering.  A motion was made to approve the changes.  The motion was seconded and approved. Unanimous.

 

NEW COURSES

AE 3122   Aerospace Structural Analysis        (3-0-3)

AE 4580   Introduction to Avionics Integration  (3-0-3)

 

Deactivate AE 3121

 

Replace AE 3121 (2-3-3) with AE 3122 (3-0-3).    There is no net change in the number of hours required for the degree.

 

7.       The SCHOOL OF MECHANCIAL ENGINEERING requested a modification to the CS requirements for the BS in Mechanical Engineering and the BS in Nuclear and Radiological Engineering.  After discussion, the requested was tabled. 

 

8.       The SCHOOL OF MODERN LANGUAGES requested that the requirements for the minor in Modern Languages be revised by deleting the specified courses in each language and replacing them with 18 hours of language electives, subject to constraints and approval.  A motion was made to approve the request.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

 

9.       The SCHOOL OF MODERN LANGUAGES requested the approval of two new Spanish courses and revisions to three Germany courses.  After discussion, the request was tabled until additional information concerning the request could be provided.

 

10.   The COLLEGE OF ARCHITECHTURE requested the following new courses, for the purpose of renumbering existing courses.  A motion was made to approve the request.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

 

COA 3115   Art and Architecture in Italy I  (3-0-3), replacing COA 2115

COA 3116  Art and Architecture in Italy II (3-0-3), replacing COA 2116

 

11.   The COOPERATIVE DIVISION requested the following new courses to be used to indicate on the transcript that a student participated in an approved internship.  These courses are similar to the Co-op courses that are used to indicate participation in the cooperative plan.  After discussion, a motion was made to approve the courses.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

12.   The Committee discussed the procedure for the hearing of appeals.  It was agreed that McMath, Hughes and McIver would present recommendations for modification of the current procedures.

 

13.   The committee reviewed 6 petitions, all were approved unless noted:

 

1-to allow student to change major (denied)

3-to withdraw from course(s) (1 denied)

1-waive 36-hour rule (denied)

1-to transfer English course taken by correspondence
