Minutes of the Graduate Curriculum Committee Meeting

March 27, 2003

 

 

PRESENT: Bidstrup-Allen (ChE), Green (MATH), Hayes (ECE), Hertling (ECE), Jagoda (AE), Khan (ARCH),

McIver (REG), Parsons (MGT), Sanders (MSE), Venkateswaran (COC), Will (CEE)

 

VISITORS: Baum (IPST), Kilroy (Grad Studies), Teja (ChE), Yoganathan (BME)

 

 

1.       A motion was made to approve the February 27, 2003 minutes as corrected. 

The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

 

2.       The SCHOOL OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING requested the approval of a MS

in Biomedical Engineering.  This degree is a terminal degree, and will

only be offered to students who for academic reasons are unable to

complete the PHD degree.  A motion was made to accept the request. 

The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

 

3.       The SCHOOLS OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING, MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AND

CHEMISTRY & BIOCHEMISTRY requested an MS and PHD in Paper Science and

Engineering and the creation of the following new courses.  These degrees,

which are multidisciplinary, are needed to complete the integration of IPST

and Georgia Tech.  A motion was made to approve the request.  The motion was

seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

CHE 6231 Environmental Engineering for Forest Products  (3-0-3)

CHE 6630 Pulp and Paper Manufacturing I (3-0-3)

CHE 6631 Pulp and Paper Manufacturing II  (3-0-3)

CHE 6634 Wet-end Processing of Paper  (3-0-3)

ME 6140 Physical Properties of Paper (3-0-3)

ME 6281 Mechanics of Paper Forming and Coating (3-0-3)

 

4.       A request was made by the Registrar's Office to approve several course

revisions that were identified during the production of the catalog.  These

revisions mainly were mainly pre-requisite changes and deactivation of

courses. A motion was made to approve the request.  The motion was seconded

and approved.  Unanimous.

 

5.       The request for CP 67xx and PUBP 67XX, Negotiation, Facilitation and Conflict

Resolution was tabled. 

 

6.       Maureen Kilroy requested that the Committee consider the interaction of

two current policies regarding enrollment in a student's graduation term.  After

much discussion, it was agreed that it is allowable for a student who enrolled

for just one hour of thesis in what should have been the last term to utilize a

waiver of enrollment in the subsequent term, given all requirements for the

waiver of enrollment are met.  If, however, the student has enrolled for one

hour of thesis more than once, the Committee agreed that he or she is not

eligible for the waiver of enrollment and must enroll for a minimum of three

hours in order to graduate.

 

7.       Chairman Green will be attending a meeting with the Chair of the

Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, Joseph Hoey and representatives from the

Executive Board to discuss Program review.
