The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) was created in 1998 following a reorganization/restructuring involving former programs in materials, metallurgical, and ceramic engineering. The School currently has 23 1/3 faculty members and a total enrollment of 183, 112 of which are graduate students. The school offers the Ph.D. and a masters degree; in Fall 2003, there were 76 students pursuing the Ph.D. while 36 students were enrolled in the masters program. The School underwent an external review in Fall 2003. The School has a clearly stated strategic plan that articulates a realistic vision statement: “to be internationally recognized as a leading materials research and education program.” Echoing the overall sense of the visiting External Review Committee, it would appear that MSE is well-positioned to make substantive progress in making this vision a reality through enhancement of its existing core strengths in addition to expanding its efforts and activities into newer areas of the discipline.
