TITAN Probes Following CASSINI-HUYGENS
MetadataShow full item record
The NASA/ESA/ASI CASSINI-HUYGENS mission has renewed our view of the Saturnian system and its potential promises to allow us to enhance in our understanding of the evolution of the Solar System and eventual life beyond Earth. TITAN was revealed by HUYGENS, designed by Thales Alenia Space France, and the CASSINI numerous flybys, and the end of the nominal Cassini mission in mid 2008 will leave us with a long list of outstanding questions. Both in the USA and Europe, scientists and agencies have initiated work to define a future mission to Titan and the Saturnian System, via the NASA OPAG and ESA Cosmic Vision programmes. This paper proposes an overview of potential Titan probe concepts enabling to reach the objectives identified by the scientific community. In addition to a large mobility vehicle, a montgolfiere or balloon, lighter vehicles addressing specific science features are identified complementary to the primary mission: * High latitude coverage * High altitude measurements * Trade-off between a low number of probes with more science versus a larger number of probes.
