Municipal sewage sludge (MSS) is proposed as a suitable component of wetland substrates for the purpose of wetland creation. Sludge use is currently limited to dry sites due to potential water pollution concerns. Wetland structure and function were compared to sewage and waste disposal facilities to identify strengths and weaknesses in natural pollution control mechanisms. Wetland and substrate designs were proposed to augment the natural mechanisms.
