    Abstract
A method and apparatus for performing optical serial-to-parallel conversion of an optical data pulse stream having a multiplicity of data pulses, wherein the data pulse stream is formatted into a series of data pulses and an associated timing pulse which is out of phase with the data pulses, the data pulses are propagated along a forward path in a waveguide, the timing pulse is counter-propagated and collided with the data pulses thereby producing second harmonic generation from the collision, and the pulses travelling perpendicularly to the forward path are collected at a plurality of locations along the forward path to produce a parallel output.
