Chemical Interactions Between Organic and Inorganic Components in Atmospheric Aerosols

Atmospheric aerosols have important impacts on climate, air quality and human health. Air quality and climate models often cannot capture the chemical complexity of aerosols, which contain inorganic ions and thousands of different organic compounds. Our group focuses on elucidating the chemical interactions among these different components, and identifying the important mechanisms for atmospheric modeling. In this talk, I will discuss mixing of different organic components and new methods to parameterize these interactions using Hansen Solubility Parameter. These mixing interactions can result in differences of up to 30% in predictions of mass concentrations. We also investigated the reactions between sulfur dioxide and secondary organic aerosol, which are rapid and may be an important sink for SO2 in the atmosphere. Our work highlights the importance of understanding these interactions, and identifying the most important mechanisms in order to accurately and efficiently model atmospheric aerosol formation.
