The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME)
The role of the biomedical engineer is to provide answers to problems arising from the study of living systems by employing the methodology and principles of engineering. We are now embarking on the Biomedical Century, and the need for engineers trained in biomedicine is increasing at a tremendous pace.
In September 1997, after an intense planning and review process that involved faculty from both institutions, Georgia Tech joined with Emory University School of Medicine to establish The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME).

Deep-Ultraviolet Microscopy and Spectroscopy of Biological Samples
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2022-01-10)Ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy is a powerful and well-established tool for quantitative chemical and molecular analysis, however its application to biomedical molecular imaging and microscopy has been limited. Nevertheless, ... -
Predicting Metabolic Cost Using Cumulative Muscle Activation Per unit Distance
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2023-01-18)Many studies are currently being conducted in order to optimize the functions of exoskeletons in a way that generates the greatest benefit for the user. However, this research is hampered by the traditional methodology of ... -
Developing a Recommendation-Based Application to Help Endocrinologists Treat Type II Diabetes Mellitus
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2023-01-18)Diabetes Mellitus type II is a disease characterized by abnormally high levels of glucose in the bloodstream (hyperglycemia) due to decreased insulin secretion, insulin resistance, or both. It affects approximately 425 ... -
Magnetic Nanoparticle Targeting of a 3D Bioprinted Model of Pulmonary Vasculature to Address Restenosis
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2022-12-02)Pulmonary Vein Stenosis (PVS) is a cardiovascular condition characterized by progressive lumen size reduction in one or more of the pulmonary veins. Central characteristics associated with pathological PVS state include ... -
Shifting the Balance of Inflammatory and Pro-Resolving Lipid Mediators in Volumetric Muscle Loss Injuries
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2022-11-07)Extremity trauma involving large tissue loss (e.g., VML) presents a significant clinical challenge for both general and military populations. The frank loss of musculature characteristic of VML sufficiently disrupts or ... -
The Timescales of Transformation Across Brain Structures in the Thalamocortical Circuit
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2022-11-09)Sensory processing requires reliable transmission of sensory information across multiple brain regions, from peripheral sensors, through sub-cortical structures, to sensory cortex, ultimately producing the sensory ... -
An Investigation of Scleral Biomechanics and Myopia in the Mouse
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2022-12-19)The prevalence of myopia, or ”nearsightedness” is on the rise globally, set to affect about half of the global population by 2050. A myopic eye is characterized by a mismatch between the focal point of incoming light and ... -
Modelling and Characterization of Force Plate Measurements on Subacute Post-Concussion Subjects Through Machine Learning
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2021-12-14)Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) are one of the leading causes of neurological disorders. Symptoms after a mTBI may include headache, dizziness, and balance issues, among others, with vestibular disorders observed in ... -
High-throughput Tools and Techniques to Investigate Environmental Effects on Aging Behaviors in Caenorhabditis elegans
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2021-12-09)Aging is modulated by genetic and environmental cues; however, it is difficult to study how these perturbations modulate the aging process in a robust, high-throughput manner. Methods to gather large-scale behavioral data ... -
Methods For High Throughput Single Cell Analysis Throughout Intact Human Brain Organoids
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2021-12-09)Human brain organoids, three-dimensional spheres of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), have become widely used as a model system to study human neurodevelopment in recent years. Specifically, the model of intact ... -
