Title: Interior view of Shack #1, Room #3 with bunk beds, dresser, and trunk
Author: Barret, John T.
Abstract: The right hand corner of Room 3, Shack No. 1, as seen from the door of the room. These are the bunks of the freshmen. Allen occupied the top bunk, Allen's fellow freshman, Barret, occupied the lower bunk. The large trunk at the right belonged to Mr. Mitchell the Inspector for the Shack. Being an important senior on the campus, he needed extra clothes, such as a second suit and a tuxedo. Speaking from memory, the ROTC cap and tie hanging on the dresser mirror belonged to Mr. Mitchell. The dresser had three drawers, one for each occupant. The aspect of this room presents the usual one after occupants had policed the room after breakfast, but had visited it during the day. As a consequence Barret has left part of his laundry on his lower bunk. Because Randy Allen played three or four years of high school football and was captain and quarterback his senior high school year, Barret was disappointed Allen did not go out for the Tech Freshman team. However, he did go down to the freshman locker room, offering his services. He reported they issued him a lousy uniform, - dirty, torn and ill-fitting, with shoes that did not fit. So after a few days during which he felt the coaches pretty much ignored him, Allen turned in his uniform and quit. He never tried football again. Barret had seen Allen play in high school and knew he was a good man, even if it was in Arkansas. In his senior year against Russellville he took a kickoff and ran it back for a touchdown. Randolph was a sizable boy of about 185 pounds and ought to have made the Tech team. He did however make one of the battalion teams one or two years. Maybe his real trouble was none of the coaches tried to encourage him.
